Course Description

Basic skills will be taught, including grips, services, overhead and underhand strokes, and footwork. Rules, terminology, and etiquette are covered. Intermediate skills such as drives, service returns, forehand and backhand smash returns, attacking clears, and sliced drop shots are taught. Singles and doubles play along with drill work throughout the term.

Schedule

A rough guideline of topics for each week of the course follows:

  • Week 1: Course logistics; equipment usage; grips, rules, terminology, etiquette; singles services; basic clears, drops, lifts.
  • Week 2: Overhead and underhand clears; backcourt and net drops; singles play.
  • Week 3: Drives, smashes; doubles services, doubles play.
  • Week 4: Review of shots; combination drills; backhands; basic footwork.
  • Week 5: Review of shots; footwork drills; doubles rotation, doubles play.
  • Week 6: Footwork drills; general strategy; shot choice and placement; service returns.
  • Week 7: Review of footwork; accuracy drills; service returns; smash returns.
  • Week 8: Review of shots; review of footwork; deception; attacking clears, slice drops.
  • Week 9: Open play.
